Jurors' Statement
These days a witness with a camera can instantly share a captured moment with countless viewers around the earth. We are deluged with imagery, in our physical and in our virtual surroundings. How do we sort through it all, to keep the pictures worth preserving?
At National Geographic, we see an extraordinary volume of photography. We might receive up to 65,000 frames for one story. So, please ask yourself, what will seize my attention? Will it be the subject itself - is it surprising enough, or so little seen? Or have you shot the familiar in a way that utterly transforms it? Have you visually translated your own revelation into a memorable icon with lasting impact?
I'm open to the complete stylistic range, from hard-hitting journalistic documentation to hallucinatory personal visions. I ask only that you send me the images most authentic to your own way of seeing.
