TPS National Photography Award 2020

TPS congratulates Jaclyn Wright as the winner of the TPS National Photography Award, who was awarded $2,000 along with a solo exhibition. Wright's solo exhibition Marked ran from March 7 - April 18, 2020 at the Sabine Street Studios in Houston, Texas during FotoFest 2020, as part of FotoFest 2020 Biennial Participating Spaces. TPS participated for the first time in the East Austin Studio Tour (EAST), a two weekend festival, which took place in Austin, Texas November 16-17 and November 23-24, 2019 from 12-6 pm each day. Valley Girls was co-curated by Jasmine DeFoore and Sarah Sudhoff and was on display at AGAVE PRINT, 1312 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78702 (Artist #472 on the tour map /catalog). Read more here.

TPS National Photography Award 2018

The joint recipients for this inaugural award, Laura J. Bennett and Tarrah Krajnak, attended the opening held in collaboration with FotoFest 2018 on March 23, 2018, at Red Maple Gallery Houston, TX, and delivered separate gallery talks. A solo exhibition of each artist’s work, proudly sponsored by Red River Paper, was on view March 10 through April 22, 2018.

Krajnak’s show, titled Sismos79 (derived from the Spanish word for “earthquake”), is a long-term project that examines the particular sites of intersection between her life and the turbulent period in the history of Lima, Peru, circa 1979. This work is on view in the John F. Lott Gallery at LHUCA (Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts) in Lubbock, TX, September 7 through October 27, 2018.

Dames of Anatomy, Bennett’s exhibition, will feature both platinum/palladium and archival pigment prints from her ongoing project which addresses the complexities of the female condition and challenges cultural norms. Her show will also appear at LHUCA in the McDonald Gallery from November 2 through December 22, 2018.

Alternative Processes and Integrated Media Competition 2018

Juried by Christopher James, artist, author, University Professor and Director of the MFA in Photography and Integrated Media program at Lesley University - College of Art and Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts

This was the fourth competition of its kind, which sought imagery derived from alternative photographic processes and historical printing methods including but not limited to: Albumen, Anthotype, Argyrotype, Athenatype, Bayard Direct Positive, Calotype, Carbon, Casein, Chrysotype, Cyanotype, Dusting-On Process, Gum Bichromate, Gumoil, Herschel’s Breath Printing, Inkjet Photopolymer Gravure, Ivorytype, Kallitype, Mordancage, Platinum/Palladium, POP, Solarplate Intaglio, Van Dyke Brown, Wet Plate Collodion, Whey Process, Ziatype and all photographic image-making techniques that incorporate traditional mediums such as printmaking, ceramics or painting.

TPS 25: The International Competition highlighted 60 works by 25 artists to commemorate the 25th anniversary of this show. The exhibition opened with a reception June 3, 2016, at Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine, Texas, and was accompanied by supplementary programming during Alpine Photo Weekend. TPS 25 traveled next to Martin Museum of Art at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, which opened with a reception on October 6, 2016. The show remained on display until November 13, 2016, before traveling to The Center for Contemporary Arts in Abilene, Texas, from November 23, 2016, through January 21, 2017. The Alternative Processes Competition 2015

Juried by Christopher James, Director of the MFA Photography Program at Lesley University College of Art and Design, Cambridge, Massachusetts

This was the third competition of its kind, which sought imagery derived from alternative photographic processes and historical printing methods including but not limited to: Albumen, Anthotype, Argyrotype, Athenatype, Bayard Direct Positive, Calotype, Carbon, Casein, Chrysotype, Cyanotype, Dusting-On Process, Gum Bichromate, Gumoil, Herschel’s Breath Printing, Inkjet Photopolymer Gravure, Ivorytype, Kallitype, Mordancage, Platinum/Palladium, POP, Solarplate Intaglio, Van Dyke Brown, Wet Plate Collodion, Whey Process, Ziatype and all photographic image making techniques that incorporate the integration of traditional mediums such as printmaking, ceramics and painting.
