About the Juror Henry Horenstein, Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design
Henry Horenstein is a widely published and exhibited professional photographer and the author of more than two dozen books, including the classic texts Black & White Photography, Beyond Basic Photography, and Color Photography, and monographs such as Creatures, Canine, and Racing Days. His work has appeared in Life, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, and Town & Country. Horenstein has taught photography at the Rhode Island School of Design for more than twenty years and is currently a professor there.
Jurors' Statement
When I was studying history in college, my professor said to me: "If you want to understand the history, first understand the historian." Photography means different things to different people. But so many different styles and intentions are viable. This is why I try to keep the kinds of photographs that I make from influencing me when looking at work. What I look for is an artist's intention, passion, and commitment. Does he or she have a stake in the work beyond trying to satisfy the viewer? Is the work personal? Or, is it mimicking what other people are doing? In other words, when I see a body of work I want to know what the work is about - and through that I want to know who the person is who created it.
