Burton Pritzker

03. Burton Pritzker – (Austin, Texas)
Form, Composition, & Awareness Through Photography
Saturday, October 23 – 8:30am-4:30pm
Sunday, October 24 – 8:30am-4:30pm

Photography is a medium of light, just as dance is a medium of movement. All things are made of light in varying degrees, even shadow. Shadow is defined by light, that is, by its absence. Everything that we look at, the sunset, your children, birds in flight, waves about to break, clouds moving in a storm is reflected light. Light is transitory, a moment in time like a note of music, or as Miles Davis said, “it is in the air never to be captured again”. How fitting that a camera is equipped to capture a moment in time. So, if we stop and become aware of light, we open ourselves to the possibility of deepening our perception of a moment.

Photography is about seeing, as well. And seeing does not occur just with our eyes but with something inside. Inner Vision, so to speak. Tukaram Maharaj, a great saint, said “Fill your eyes with wisdom, and then perceive this world.” The sages say that if you just pause, if you feel the truth of your own heart, everything transforms itself for you. So, we must transform our eyes and then we can really see. The camera can become a willing ally in this quest. A tool to grow. Our time together will be spent delving into the two main components of art: Form and Content. We can define Form as the shape, texture, tones and composition of an image. Content is its emotional, spiritual and intellectual component – its meaning. Both go hand in hand.

The first day of this two day workshop will involve a slide presentation of many different art forms throughout history to illustrate the use of Form and Content in their creation. This will involve lecture and discussion as a group. Students will be asked to bring in prints in whatever process they prefer. We will then discuss the images and consider how to imbue Form with Content. This is a workshop in learning to See. The class will dismiss early to allow students to implement the days learning by taking photographs.

The second day students will bring new work created as a response to the previous days class. What is it you feel deeply and want to express. How do you get in touch with yourself and bring it to the surface visually in a photograph. Are there ideas or feelings you have about the structure of time, relationships, transcendence, anger, fear, love or union with divine energy. We will critique each person’s work, individually and as a group, and talk about what you have learned and how photography can help you express what you feel and think.

Burton Pritzker received a degree in architecture from the University of California at Berkeley in 1965. He found architecture limiting as an outlet for creativity and became interested in drawing, sculpture and photography. Pritzker eventually switched full-time to photography and in 1970 began exhibiting his work steadily.

In 2002 the University of Texas Press released his book, Texas Rangeland. Selections from the book have been published in Lenswork Magazine and B & W Magazine. The Museum of the Southwest, Midland, Texas, published his second book, Forgotten Planes, in 2009 in connection with a solo exhibit and acquisition of 85 prints. Selections of his work have been placed in prominent private and museum collections. He teaches at Texas State University and lives in Austin,Texas.

This workshop will introduce you to the Precision Digital Negatives (PDN) system, a patented printing method designed to create large format, customized inkjet digital negatives for all contact printing processes, including alternative processes, gravure and silver. By applying the techniques of PDN, you will avoid guesswork, test strips, dodging/burning and other post-processing, streamlining your workflow and revolutionizing the way you print. Additionally, PDN takes into account every printing variable to ensure consistent, predictable results and optimal user control. You will learn about PDN’s proprietary software Curve Calculator and its most recently released version as well as PDN’s innovative calibration palettes. I will also share examples of calibration tests and final prints produced with this ingenious system. To learn more, please visit www.precisiondigitalnegatives.com.

Amy Holmes George is a fine art photographer who currently teaches alternative processes at the University of North Texas. Amy, a proofreader and beta tester for PDN, has been employing this system in her personal work since 2005 and received a 2008 Fulbright grant for a project based on the method. Exhibited throughout the U.S., Italy, and China, her work has been featured in over eighty exhibitions and is housed in collections at The Getty, The Kinsey Institute and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.
