Congratulations to the 51 artists whose work was selected for the exhibition. We had 184 photographers submit 1,206 images.
Katherine Ware post-jurying comments:
The Power of Two. I’m never sure if my selection for a juried competition is skewed by the submissions or by my own obsessions. This time, I notice a preponderance of twosomes: girl and iguana, couple on a couch, woman and dog, two ice cream chompers, framed picture and picture window, dual tree huggers, twinned lime shirts, branches and reflection. So in some cases, I also chose two images by some of the photographers in the group. It would have been fun to select the whole show that way, but there are too many good pictures and it was already an agony to have to leave out some of them due to space requirements.
Our world is made up of many duos, such as mother and child, infatuated lovers, aunt and uncle, us and them, you and me. There’s a natural bonding that we do and when we are alone we are wired to seek out another, whether human, animal, or spirit. It helps us survive, it makes us stronger by accepting interdependence, but sometimes it is also exclusionary. The pairs in this show are further doubled by the presence of the photographer (as Ansel Adams would remind us) and the viewer, who widen the circle. We are fortunate to live in a place founded on the power of plurality and differing points of view. It is the special gift of art to convey the diversity of human experience in ways that can touch us all.

Juror's Pre-Jurying Comments:
What does the world look like through your eyes? It’s a tale no one else can tell. A well-crafted print of a compelling image that speaks of your unique perspective on the experience of being human is what will stop me in my tracks. It’s a tremendous accomplishment to strive for, and no easy assignment. Such a picture has the power to cross all sorts of boundaries, transcend intellectual communication, and connect you immediately and viscerally with your viewers. Hit me with your best shot!
Katherine Ware
Curator of Photography
New Mexico Museum of Art
About the Juror:
Katherine Ware, currently the curator of the New Mexico Museum of Art, Katherine began her career at the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. She has worked extensively with the photography collections at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Oakland Museum in California. Ms. Ware has served as juror for numerous exhibitions in the United States and has published writings on Man Ray, L. Moholy-Nagy, Harry Callahan, Julien Levy, and Bauhaus photography, as well as on contemporary photography. After coming to the Philadelphia Museum of Art (one of the major, encyclopedic art museums in North America) at the end of 1999, she continued the Museum’s commitment to acquiring work by contemporary artists, particularly those working internationally. While exhibitions have been primarily collection-based - Harry Callahan, William Klein, Clarence John Laughlin, The Faceless Figure, Mavericks of Color, The Silver Garden- the Museum also hosted traveling shows and had a gallery dedicated to photography that may offer fresh opportunities.
