In previous years, the PHOTOTexas event included one weekend of popular workshops at UT Austin, our Annual Print Auction, and our International Exhibition Opening Reception. PHOTOTexas, now in its sixteenth year, PHOTOTexas October 2010 is bringing the South Texas Photography Community together in a two week collaboration of photography related events.

This year will include the 16th Annual Collector's Fine Print Auction and Raffle at Davis Gallery in Austin, Captivar La Luz: A Latino Experience Exhibit opening at San Antonio’s Blue Star Art Complex’s LAB Gallery, a Downtown San Antonio Architectural Photography Tour, Nighttime Photography Workshop at Pearl Brewery Complex, the TPS 19: The International Competition opening at A Smith Gallery in Johnson City, a series of workshops that will be held at UT Austin and more.

Fine Print Auction
October 22nd at Davis Gallery, 837 - W12 Street.
6p-8:15p Auction Party and reception.
7:15p Live auction of select prints.


Auction XVI, will be held Friday October 22 from 6:00pm-8:15pm at the Davis Gallery, 837 W 12th Street. Bill Davis has graciously turned one of Austin's premier galleries over to TPS for the auction since 1999. Silent bidding will continue until 8:15pm Friday evening. The auction is TPS's major fund raising event and serves as vital support for our programs including the color exhibition catalogs and TPS's traveling exhibits. An Auction catalogue will be mailed to all TPS members in late September and will be available on the TPS website.

With over 80 prints being auctioned each year, the auction is an economical way to become of a collector of fantastic prints from the likes of Christopher Broughton, Nevada Weir, Kim Weston, Dan Burkholder, Kate Breakey, Chip Hooper, and Robb Kendrick. TPS publishes a color catalog which is mailed to members in advance. The catalog will be widely distributed and is available on our website for out-of-town bidders. PHOTOTexas Raffle

TPS will again sponsor a raffle of fabulous photographic items, including equipment, photos, Santa Fe Workshops tuition and much more. Raffle tickets begin at $5 each and may be purchased directly from TPS. You may buy a single ticket for one item, multiple tickets for one item or a number tickets for any or all items. A list of Raffle items will be on the TPS website and included in the Auction Catalog.

Workshop Weekend at UT Austin and A Smith Gallery, Johnson City
October 23 & 24

The Annual Workshop series, now in it’s 27th year, will commence once again at University of Texas in Austin, Saturday and Sunday, October 23 & 24 and in Johnson City at A Smith Gallery on October 23rd. Topics span from technical to artistic processes and are aimed at all levels and interests of photography. Several workshops will emphasize shooting with and the critiquing of students work. Workshops will be held in the University of Texas Photojournalism Department. Complete information on Workshops 28 can be found on the TPS web site or you may register for the workshops, and if you desire lunch, by downloading the Workshops Registration and Lunch Form in pdf formatt and mail the form to:

TPS 19: The International Competition
October 23–November 17 at A Smith Gallery in Johnson City, Texas.
Artists reception October 23, 5p-8p.

Each year the TPS 19:The International Competition is premiered. Now in its 19th year, photographers from around the globe have entered and been reviewed by such jurors as Anne Tucker, Roy Flukinger, Peter Halpert, Wendy Watriss, and Cig Harvey. Accepted entrants receive a color catalog of the exhibit, which is also mailed to galleries, museums and curators around the country.
This year, Katherine Ware, Curator of Photography at the New Mexico Museum of Art, has selected 51 photographers for this exhibit. Cash awards are provided for winners during a short ceremony at the opening.

Captivar La Luz: A U.S. Latino Experience
Juried by Kathy Vargas of the University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio.
Artist Reception October 13, 5p-8p at Blue Stat LAB Gallery, San Antonio.

The Texas Photographic Society will be opening this year's PHOTOTexas event in San Antonio with a Latino theme Exhibition. Kathy Vargas, Chair od Art Department and Professor of Photography at the University of the Incarnate Word, has selected 10 Project photographers and 31 Individual photographers whose work was selected for this exhibition. We had 129 photographers submit 1,196 images.

The exhibit opens at Blue Star LAB Gallery, an annex of Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, and a venue that allows for expanded exhibitions from the Blue Star Main Campus, as well as the promotion of experimental work. This gallery was generously made possible by Zurich International Properties, Inc. Blue Star Contemporary Art Center is a non-profit, non-collecting contemporary art center in San Antonio, Texas that advances the growth and understanding of contemporary art, artists and the curatorial process. Through exhibitions and a variety of programs, Blue Star is an active participant in the development of regional, national and international contemporary art and provides a lively forum for the visual arts dialogue. www.bluestarartscomplex.com/index.php.

The exhibit will open with an artist reception on October 13, 2010 from 5pm tp 8pm. Captivar La Luz is expected to travel for two year.

Downtown San Antonio Architectural Photography Tour with Dror Baldinger, AIA San Antonio & Architect at Marmon Mok.
Sponsored by Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in San Antonio.
October 16th, 9am – 4pm. $35 person. Does not include meal.

Participants will be guided through downtown San Antonio historical locations and along the River, while discussing the city’s architecture and history. The Tour will also include at visit to the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in Hemisphere Park for An Imaginary City, an exhibit and lecture of Mexican Architecture of the 19th and 20th Centuries in Photographs by Luis Márquez. The tour will end with a Riverboat ride from the Hemisphere Park to the Pearl Brewery Complex stopping for discussion and photography opportunities.

Nightime Photography Workshop
