Jurors' Statement
When I was younger, I wondered why anyone would feel compelled to write when they could photograph. My stance has softened somewhat over the years but I still appreciate the magical and transcendent work of photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ernst Haas and Robert Frank, the spontaneous street photography of Helen Levitt and the starkness of a Walker Evans’ landscape.
Dr. Clark Baker
Chair, Department of Jounalism, Baylor University
As an artist I am interested in the broad contemporary discourse that photography provides and as a viewer and juror, I look for images that ask me to participate and to engage in that visual dialogue in a new way. I look for work that touches my senses and tests my understanding; strong, articulate photographs that compel me to seek and consider another’s vision, to be informed by beauty and truth, challenged or transformed. We know the iconic images and I search for a unique vision and inquiry as the practice of photography evolves.
Susan Mullally
Assistant Professor of Art, Baylor University
Thank you Texas Photographic Society, for giving me this opportunity to look at some of the best work being produced in photography today. When I begin the difficult task of narrowing my selection I will look for images that possess the visual power to engage me viscerally, intellectually and/or emotionally.
Susan Dunkerley Maguire
Assistant Professor of Art, Baylor University
