Big Bend Ranch State Park
February Photo Tour
Friday, February 24, March 30 - April 1, May 25 - 27
The Big Bend Ranch State Park begins the first in a series of camping/photography tours that take you to some of the most rugged, remote, and scenic locations in the park. These locations are only accessible via primitive roads that are impassible to all but 4-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicles. The tours are intended for photographers who would like to work in the park but who lack the proper vehicles for reaching the best sites. An experienced professional will be available to answer questions and provide help where needed, but there are no classroom activities - just two days of uninterrupted photography.
This month]'s tour is to Guale Mesa. You'll camp atop a high bluff that overlooks Rancherias canyon on the east, La Guitarra Mountain to the south, and the Lower Guale Mesa to the southwest. A short side trip on Sunday morning will give you an opportunity to photograph scenic Tapado Canyon at sunrise. The view southwest from the canyon rim stretches all the way to the Sierra Ricca mountains in Mexico. Blue-green walls line the canyon walls to the northwest, and the rim itself is quintessential Chihuahuan Desert. Few people have even seen this magnificent sight, much less photographed it!
Price for the tour is $350; it includes one night's lodging at the Bunkhouse, one night's camping "on location," all meals and transportation. The tour is limited to 6 photographers - the perfect size for a campfire supper and friendly conversation. You can make reservations by calling 432-358-4444. This price will have to be pre-paid.
Note: you must bring your own camping supplies, i.e. tent, cot, sleeping bag, pillow. We are only providing the ride to the location, food, and the atmosphere.

Palladium Printing Workshop
Craig Barber
February 10-12
If you've looked at your negatives and seen a beautiful tonal scale but have
been frustrated because your silver prints weren't able to deliver all of the
information your negatives offered, then this is the process for you.
Platinum/Palladium printing is an incredibly beautiful, tactile, and
archival process and this workshop is the perfect introduction. This
is an intensive, hands-on workshop with the emphasis being on printing and only printing and is designed so you will leave with a solid understanding of the process, which will enable you to continue on your own. not only will you become proficient at it, but you will also have the opportunity to learn with a small group of fellow photographers who, by shared experience, will make the task both easier and more enjoyable. Palladium printing, like silver printing, takes time to master and this class will provide an excellent beginning. Class time is devoted entirely to printing, printing, and more printing. Lots of it. The workshop takes place in my studio in Woodstock, NY, which was designed primarily for alternative processes and is a great place to spend time and work. Lunches will be provided, as will coffee and juice in the morning.

The Galapagos Islands - Natural History and Family Photo Adventure
June 15 - 25, 2012
Karen Schulman, [Steamboat Springs, CO]
In conjunction with Strabo Photo Tour Collection
This 10-day land and cruise program is for the whole family. That's right, you can bring your children or grandchildren (ages 7-17) on this experience of a lifetime.
The Galapagos archipelago is a unique world heritage site. The Galapagos offer you a way to magically step back in time, to visit an isolated, relatively untouched place where you can be at one with nature as nowhere else. Animals have no fear of humans - birds light on your arm, curious sea lions come to get acquainted, fur seals and penguins join you for a swim in the clear waters.
Some features of this family departure: age-appropriate activities from instruction on snorkeling and sea kayaking for teens to briefings geared to the younger set with kid friendly meals. Children can visit the bridge and learn about astronomy, navigational charts and tie nautical knots with the Captain. And photo instruction isn't just for the adults. With a degree in elementary education and lots of experience, Karen is thrilled to be able to offer photo instruction to 'kids of all ages' with any type of camera, even an iPhone or iPod!
